PIKE TWP - East Sparta firefighters extinguished a fire that broke out Wednesday evening in a trailer of waste at the Countywide Recycling & Disposal Facility, a fire official said.
East Sparta Fire Chief Arnie Adams said the blaze was first reported at about 9:45 p.m., and the cause is unknown. No one was hurt, and the fire, which did not spread, caused no environmental problems, he added.
The 48-foot-by-8-foot trailer had been set aside by landfill personnel and placed on top of the landfill's massive hill because the waste had apparently higher-than-normal temperatures, said Adams.
Countywide General Manager Tim Vandersall said his employees had not yet given him details on what happened.
